official statement of the "Prime-Minister" band on the results of Eurovision
2002.
Russia at Eurovision In 2002 the patron of Eurovision in Russia, ORT TV, was flooded with an record number of competition applications. In the month and a half between January 17 and February the total of 11 742 phonograms on tapes and CDs was received – that’s how many musicians were eager to represent their country in this biggest and most prestigious European music competition. Russia has been taking part in these music Olympics since 1994, sending to Eurovision its best pop-music performers. Over the years Eurovision arena has been graced by Philip Kirkorov, Alla Pougacheva, Alsou, Mumiy Troll group and other Russian top-ten stars. Yet, representatives of Russia never had the luck of the Swedes, the Danish, the Estonians and participants from other countries who won the competition over the years. So far Russia’s best year was 2002 when young singer Alsou received “silver.” But in the last years Russia has been integrating into the European community, Eurovision is becoming more and more important, and Russian performers come better prepared. This year the right to represent Russia at EuroVision-2000 in the Estonian capital of Tallinn was won by Prime Minister quartet. The competent and representative panel of ORT TV leaders, music producers, composers and popular performers chose one out of the 25 finalists of the national talent search: the song NORTHERN GIRL (music by K.Breitburg, lyrics by K.Kavaleryan, E.Fridlyand, I.Antonyan). In the experts’ opinion, the song is a “perfect fit” both for the Eurovision format, and for that of Prime Minister itself. The style of the group manifested in their debut album “Dirty Dances” (1998) and fully evolved by their next album “Straight for the East” (2001). The group did not have to change its style and adjust to the European song standards: their Tallinn offering will match their image in a most natural way. Moscow March,4 Interfax- Russia will be presented at ESC by Premier-Ministr with song "Northern Girl". It was annonced by member of comission on selecting songs and singers for the contest, agent-producer of ORT Alexandr Fifeman at special press-conference held in central office of Interfax on Monday. He mentioned that in fact final was only between this song and song of Kristina Orbakayte. A.Fifeman also reported that they had received 11742 cassets and CD with songs. From them 25 were chosen to the final contest. According press-release among them were popular singers (for ex- Arkadiy Oukoupnick and Diana Gurtskaya) as well as new names (for instance taekwondo trainer Youri Zimakov etc). Besides ORT representatives led by manager general Konstaantin Ernst, jury included popular singers Lev Leschenko, Oleg Gazmanov, famous lyricist Ilya Reznick, composer Igor Matvienko ORT finally annouunced full list of conestants in Russian preselection. Here it is. Just FYI. (only few of the names are public known. The main mass are new artists from all across Russia).
Full jury listing: Konstanin
Ernst - Manager General of ORT Information from ORT official site History of preselection campaigne On 16th of January ORT as official representative of EBU in Russia started preselection campaigne. ESC Participant will be chosen by a jury which composition is unknown. Results will be announced on 1st of March. During the final there won't be any televoting (that stands against ESC Rules but ORT calles the situation exeptional). Russia will be probably the only conntry in which all kinds of voting are dark-covered. By the way finally there appeared an addittion to the rules which prescribes commentators from talking during song perfomance. At last Russia will get the chance to listen to songs 15 contestants at Russian preselection- among them Prime-Minister (Northern Girl), Kristina Orbakayte (unknown song) and Vitas(french chanson song) Today, 28 February there appeared a new information based on Vlad Yackovlev, president OGAE Russia, and FBI-music site that Prime-Minister band is confirmed as official winner of russian preselection. But there is NO new info on the website of FBI-music as well as on ORTV's. So let's wait for official confirmation from ORT. And finally HERE is official info I got from Evgeny Fridlyand- one of
songwriters and chief-producer of a song. Press-conference to annonce winner is scheduled on Monday Mar,4 12.00 CET © photo by fbi-music

Who is Who in Prime Minister 1. Almost all the members of the large Gypsy family of Jean Grigoviev-Milimerov (born December 5, 1979 in Moscow) were artists. Thanks to this, Jean’s first stage experience goes back to the age of five. It happened during one of his parents’ tours. “I remember, - says Jean, - first coming on stage with tears in my eyes. I was five, and terrified of the public. Mother made me perform a Gypsy folk dance.” At the end of the show the audience applauded enthusiastically, and the talented child wept from fear in the dressing room. Later his parents sent him to music school (class of violin). “I can’t say I became a violin virtuoso, - Grigoviev-Milimerov frankly admits, - but the violin helped me to understand what makes up music.” “I have been singing for as long as I can remember myself. Night after night I would sit by my tape player listening to songs by Boys II Men, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, repeating after them,” – says Jean. These tapes with voices of Western performers became his teachers. Today Jean has no trouble singing any song, be it from the repertoire of Michael Jackson, Brian McNight, Stevie Wonder or any other black kings of soul music. Besides being a singer and song writer, Jean is the “psychotherapist” of the group. He is the soothsayer and the troubleshooter, and spirit lifter in the group. He likes night life and discos. 2. For Peter Jason (born September 9, 1979 in Moscow), his elder brother “was a colossal influence.” The boys’ parents (father – a professional geologist from Kenya and mother – a Russian interpreter from English) were not artists, but respected their sons’ interest in music. Both went to music school to study the piano. And already at the age of 8 the younger brother, Peter, would play serious classical compositions in the Small Hall of the Bolshoi Theater. Yet, Pete’s music talent was fully revealed only in the Moscow Boys Choir, where the future premier was sharpening his vocal skills by singing classics from Bach to Mozart. At the beginning of the 90s, Peter’s elder brother founded his own group, Russian Blacks. Besides himself and Peter, it included two girls. The exotic black group was rather popular and often toured Russia, but further development needed financing, the absence of which “buried” the group. Peter spent the next two years trying to write songs “to cure boredom,” as he puts it. The cure resulted in a solo album “Thousand nights”, which, as Pete, admits, “was not wildly popular.” In Prime Minister Peter is “the bad one.” His last prank falls just short of misdemeanor: in the airport of one of Russian towns he opened the glass counter of a mini-market and took six “Sneakers” chocolate bars which he shared with his colleagues. His explanation is simple: “We were very hungry, and all alone there.” He likes to stay at home and devotes all his free time to music; he is putting together a home studio. He writes songs, but, he says, they do not fit the project, so he puts them away until he is ready to do a solo album. 3. Vyacheslav Bodolika (born June 18, 1977, in the town of Ungeny, Moldavia) joined the group when the first songs were being recorded. He comes from the family of musicians (his parents and elder sister play instruments and sing well). “My father, -- Slava says proudly, -- is a great accordion player.” Thus, Slava had no choice but to become a musician. Upon graduation from the music school (class of violin), Bodolika went on to music college and graduated with honors (classes of jazz singing and violin). While at college, the musician started a jazz-rock group Intro. “I was in my first year at the Kishinev Conservatory, -- recalls Slava, -- and was going to become a singer, when I was unexpectedly offered to join Prime Minister trio. When the musician came for the first recording session, he brought along two of his songs which became the group’s first hits: “Atomic Sense of Love” and “Dirty Dances.” Vyacheslav Bodolika is the most productive author of the four group members; he is also the most serious, a family man, the only father in the group. 4. The last to become Prime Minister was Marat Chanyshev (born March 25, 1975, in Moscow). First, Eugene Fridlyand liked his song “Two Diamonds”, but as he came to know the author better, he invited him to join the group. Marat has no professional vocal education. Like Jean, he studied by singing along with CDs, with albums by Freddy Mercury playing an important part. He learned to play the clarinet during his five years at music school. “But I’ve always wanted to be in the Army and a musician, -- says Marat, -- and that’s why I went into the military music school, which I managed to enter from the second try.” By now he has graduated from Moscow Institute of Culture, has had some valuable experience working on Russian TV (a few years as a reporter with an entertainment program “You Are A Witness”, the Russian analog of a well-known Western “Candid Camera”). By the age of 25 Marat had played at the funerals, studied Greek-Roman style of fighting, had served in the Army and had come to a firm conviction that it was time to start his own group by the name of Day and Night. “It was the Russian version of Savage Garden, -- says Marat with a smile. – But we never flourished for lack of financing.” Nobody knows how Marat’s fate would have turned out had Eugene Fridlyand not come across his songs. “I gave him a few of my songs to listen and left my phone number, -- recalls Chanyshev. – The producer must have not been too crazy about them at first, because Fridlyand called only in about seven months.” The first rehearsal with the new group member took place on September 11, 2001, on the day of New York’s terrible tragedy that shook the world. And in October Marat went on his first tour as a member of Prime Minister. “I don’t think I changed much in the group, -- Marat says modestly. – I was just a new person, but the musical direction remained the same.” press-release and official biography from official site were used in this material |
God Fathers The idea to create a boy’s band not for teenagers, but for mature audience capable of appreciating good music, comes from the mind of producer Eugene Fridlyand, an expert pop-star maker. He started as an administrator of super-group Dialogue and continued as the director of a no less popular beat-group Bravo. His producing career took off when he realized that it was much more interesting to work with beginner musicians and set them on the road to stardom. It took him only a couple of years to transform an obscure singer Valery Meladze into one of the top five performers in Russia. Collaboration with singer Nikolay Troubatch became his next step to the heights of producing. And as if this were not enough, he came up with the project he called Prime Minister. Songwriter and producer Konstantin Arsenev introduced Eugene Fridlyand to three of the future group members: Pete Jason, Dmitry Lansky, and Jean Grigoriev-Milimerov. The fourth one, Vyacheslav Bodolika, was found by composer Kim Breitburg. The group thus existed from the end of 1997 to August 2001. Then Dmitry Lansky decided to take up the solo career and was replaced by Marat Chanyshev. This musician brought not only new blood, but also quite a few hit songs: his song “Two Diamonds” immediately appeared on the charts. "Most of boys-bands are fully producer-molded; the musicians don’t matter. It is the producer who determines the style, the repertoire, the hairdos, and the costumes. The producer shoots the clips. The artists themselves have little or no say in the matter; their job is to do what the boss orders. But I have always wanted to build a group where creativity comes before anything else, where musicians have a say in all matters, write music and believe in what they do... And that’s exactly how it all worked out: today all the four group members write their own songs,” says Fridlyand. "From the very beginning, - continues composer Kim Breitburg, the author of part of the group’s repertoire, - many Russian colleagues would tell us: sure, you have great guys, if only they didn’t sing so well. Your average consumer needs some imperfection, be it in singing, dancing, or image; and when everything is perfect – which is Prime Minister’s case – people wonder. The audience begins to feel that the boys are just “making it out.” And many say that in our country you can’t be really popular with music like this. Though, if you peel their songs, strip off all fancy sounds, drums, loops, etc., and leave only the guitar, their creations are as simple as classic R'N'B. And the lyrics are fairly straightforward: mostly love songs. It’s just that their adequate perception requires a certain level of vocal culture. The Primes sing in harmonious chords, in polyphony, and use lots of different back voices and all kinds of vocal counterpoints. Naturally, it all complicates perception." At the end of 2000 they re-sang an old Soviet favorite by David Toukhmanov, “Oriental Song", which proved to be the order of the day. The song was reborn and again became a hit. The musicians proved that they “had the touch”: not only could they deal with modern soul music; even mothballed Soviet romanticism could they transform into a real winner. ”Oriental Song" marked the turning point of the group’s history. Undoubtedly, it was a certain compromise between the musicians’ idea of “real soul” and the readiness of Russian audience to accept this outlandish style. In addition to the four singers, today Prime Minister includes a group of instrument players, all of them super professional and famous musicians. Live voices blend with live music. Imagine legends of rock-music The Rolling Stones playing for Boys II Men. Of course, the comparison is much too flattering, but Prime Minister’s arsenal indeed looks like a group of well-armed musical terrorists ready to overpower any audience: from picky sophisticates to the innocents who can be satisfied with simple computer noises. Group Members on Eurovision Pete: “I have mixed feelings about all kinds of competitions. I don’t think it’s right to compare performers, let alone judge musicians and his/her music only by the song performed at the competition… No matter what place we are awarded, we plan to look good at Eurovision." Marat: “I think the song we recorded for Eurovision, NORTHERN GIRL, is a typical European hit. I hope it will help destroy Russia’s old image of the “evil empire.” I am not sure about victory, but I think we shall make it into the top five. “ Jean: “It’s a very prestigious event. It’s really hard to get in by honest competition, so it was a real shoch for me to learn that we are going to represent Russia at Eurovision. A group needs a sound European hit song to win there, and we have it.” Slava: “I have not heard the songs of our competitors, but I think our NORTHERN GIRL will be the best song there. Actually, we hope to start a new life after Eurovision." Authors of the Song Composer Kim Breitburg and poet Karen Kavaleryan are famous Russian hit-makers. Kim Breitburg was the founder and a long-time leader of super-group Dialogue. From the beginning of the 90s he has been working with many Russian stars as composer and sound-producer. Poet Karen Kavaleryan, the author of many popular songs, participated in the first Russian English-language project GORKY PARK popular in the USA and in Western Europe at the end of the 80s. NORTHERN GIRL is their first joint work. Co-authors of the text are the group’s producer Eugene Fridlyand who came up with the idea for the song, and Irina Antonyan who gave the text its final shape and style. |
